Diva of the Week - Jade

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Jade 17
High Point, North Carolina

How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is very eclectic, I always like to mix pieces with one another that you normally wouldn't see in an outfit. I like to go to local thrift stores and find cute skirts or retro blouses, and pair them with items in my closets, or other family members' closets. And I'm something like a sandal FREAK, I just can't get enough of them!

What are you wearing today?
I'm wearing a hot pink cardigan I got from my mother's closet and never gave it back. I have on a tank top I bought from Old Navy. I also have on a skirt from our local thrift store, called Carolina Thrift. The sandal, that you can hardly see, I got from Target.

Diva of the Week - Lilli

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Lilli 30
Melbourne, Australia

How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as classic, I guess. I like to wear clothes that reflect a kind of vintage aesthetic - structured shapes and timeless designs. That said, I love having things that you don't see everyone on the street wearing - I buy a lot of clothes and accessories online, especially from Etsy, because you can get custom-made pieces that are unusual one-offs. The plus-size fashion range in Australia is pitiful and I hate that size 16+ Aussie girls are having to wear exactly the same outfits because there's nothing else out there for them. It's actually one of the reasons I started Frocks & Frou Frou (my fashion blog). I read a lot of plus-size fashion blogs, but more often than not they were featuring items from stores that didn't have online shopping or wouldn't ship to Australia - I wanted to help the other non-US plus-size girls find the resources that would allow them to develop their own style outside what the few plus-size retailers in Australia were offering.

What are you wearing today?
I'm wearing a Torrid dress that I bought secondhand from a fellow Fatshionista. It's out there, but I love the psychedelic poppies! The shoes are from ZuShoes. I'm not sure where the bracelet came from - Himself gave it to me about seven years ago!

DIVA of the Week - Catrice

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Catrice 25
Minnesota, US

How would you describe your personal style?
I consider myself a bargain label hunter. I love high end designers mixed with vintage and budget concious finds from walmart, target, thrift stores, and consignment. I love to test out new looks from skinny jeans with sneakers, to cardigans with ruffley tops and slacks. I am a cornocopia of style and I believe that no trend is off limits for plus size women. Style is both individual and universal so I like to try everything at least twice. I have one rule that I live by when getting dressed: Color, bling, and texture!

What are you wearing today?
This is an Ed Hardy shirt that I picked up in the Men's section at TK Maxx. I modified it myself by cutting off the sleeves and making bows at the shoulders from the scraps. I wore it as a tunic and paired it with simple black leggings, yellow patent pumps, and some rough cut coral chip hoop earrings that I made myself. I love this outfit because it shows off my curves, while allowing me to have that high end sex appeal on a budget. Don't be afraid to cut a shirt!

Diva of the Week - Christina

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Christina 23
Washington DC, US

How would you describe your personal style?
I don't think I have a definitive style because my interests in fashion changes weekly. I'm inspired by a lot of different things so I'm always trying to incorporate something new into my wardrobe. However the thing that's constant is the pairing of contrasts. I love to pair hard with soft, structured with whimsical, vintage with a trashy edge etc. I think those combinations make for an interesting visual.

What are you wearing today?
This floral dress is one of the many gems that I found on eBay a while ago. I paired it with a yellow skirt that I bought from Alloy to make the colors of the dress pop a bit more. I love the combination of the floral dress with the tough leather and metal hardware of the Torrid belt and I think it makes the lace of the tights seem less delicate. I wore it with the cardigan I picked up from Target and some oxfords from Nine West..

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Tina Lou 29 ½
Montreal, Canada

How would you describe your personal style?
Comic Book Drag Queen turned Punk Rock Pin Up is the constant kept in the back of mind. I sometimes dress in themes like 'school boy' and 'harlequin pirate'. I like to wear all of the colors and patterns that I can, at once. 'Faggy Baggy' is also a look that inspires me and something that I aspire to for my downtime but I keep spending all my money on dresses.

What are you wearing today?
A vintage leopard print dress I thrifted in Vancouver and earrings my friend Lyndsay gave me. The gold tights are from welovecolors (the newer plus size ones in 2x). My favourite shoes ever - wedges with turquoise, light pink, red and yellow beauty/pin up posters all over them - are from babygirlboutique.

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Jasie 27
Port Townsend, WA

How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is fairly eclectic. I go back and forth from wanting to project a polished and grown-up persona, wanting to be loud and funky, and wishing I could be a bit more boho. I'm always drawn to the boho look, but it's never translated well on my actual body, with my actual personality. I'm a pretty loud and energetic person, so bright colors fit me well and let people know up front that I'm pretty bold. I like to be noticed. Fat, thin, inbetween, I've always been big on being visible... Now I just need the perfect pair of boots and I'll be set!

What are you wearing today?
The trench is from Target, cardi from Kohls and top from Walmart. My jeans are Lane Bryant (right fits, yellow) and the shoes are Old Navy. My scarf is from Forever21 and my bracelet from Icing.

DIVA of the Week - Thina

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Thina 33
Gothenburg, Sweden

How would you describe your personal style?
I really don't care about all 'the rules' some expert made up about how to dress my voluptuous body. I love dramatic colors, prints and pretty feminine dresses, skirts, bows and flowers in my hair with a vintage vibe to it all. I like to have clothes that make me feel really happy and proud to be me.

I have a weakness for 50's glamour, vintage dresses and I never ever wear pants it's just not me.

The plussize fashion in Sweden is made for elderly women, or at least not women that like to show a little bit of their curves. So I often buy my clothes at secondhand stores and mix them up with things I find in the regular stores. You can wear so much more that you think you can if you dare to try it out and if you are aware of your body and your curves.

What are you wearing today?
Today I'm wearing a white top from Lindex and a black Bolero from Kappahl. The skirt is from Myrornas secondhand and my bag as well. My tights are from Kappahl and my boots from Skopunkten. Lastly my necklace is from Glitter and the flower in my hair I bought at Prickig Katt, which is my favourite store in Gothenburg.

DIVA of the Week - Dyxie

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Dyxie 36
Louisiana, USA

How would you describe your personal style?
In a word, quirky. I am a cyclical creature. I go through phases when all I will wear are capris and Converse, and then there are times when all I want to do is wear skirts and dresses and look frilly and soft. At 36, I am comfortable enough in my own skin to express my own individual style. There was a time when I would try to blend in, or look invisible, so I wore a lot of black. I never wore prints or color. Heaven forbid I draw attention to myself. I have grown leaps and bounds since the days of the wallflower. Now, if it isn't colorful, kitschy or bold, I am not interested. You would think that living in Louisiana, the fattest state in America, that you would have plenty of plus-sized clothing choices. Sadly, no. Therefore, I do a lot of catalog and Internet shopping. I rely on the 'name-brand department stores' for pants and layering pieces, such as jackets and cardigans, and utilize the Internet and catalogs for pieces that show more of my individual style. I've never met a plaid or a polka dot that I didn't fall in love with.

What are you wearing today?
I bought this black, confetti inspired skirt about 10 years ago from Burlington Coat Factory. I am wearing it here as a tube dress. I took a yellow sash from another dress and used that as a belt. The dark denim jacket I purchased from QVC. Yes, QVC. Green suede buckle flats are Soda from Shoe Carnival. Jade fish pin was a flea market find. Dangle earrings from Lane Bryant.

DIVA of the Week - Coco

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Coco 35
Vancouver, Canada

How would you describe your personal style?
My style is fairly eclectic, but I would say that I put a lot of emphasis on vintage from the 70s and 80s, classic rock and roll comfort, and a healthy amount of experimentation with shapes, proportions, patterns and colours. Joan Jett, Ann Wilson, and Stevie Nicks and my friend Tina are all personal style icons of mine, as are 80s metal music video girls, crazy, bold fashion insiders like Anna Piaggi and Vivienne Westwood, Victorian Goth, Riot Grrl and post WWII swing era. I like being feminine, but I always make sure to toughen it up with some kind of rock and roll edge. I like metal shirts with 70s a-line skirts, flowy dresses with gobs of cheap gold necklaces and tight jeans with tall boots and leather jackets. I also like my outfits to be somewhat comic bookish, so I make sure to add bright, sometimes conflicting colours like electric blue or primary yellow to up the humor and fun. Mostly I feel like I am finally getting to interpret the style that was in when I was in grade school, but was too young to actually wear.

What are you wearing today?
I'm wearing a vintage dress with a Japanese crane motif on the skirt that I found on ebay. I'm accessorizing with green tights from UK tights.com, a wide belt from curvygirlclothing on ebay, a tiny leather jacket from a friend's vintage shop - almost identical to the one I had at age 14 - and tall, chocolate brown Pirate boots from the 80s that I also found on ebay. The red 80s bag is thrifted and the gorgeous fuschia Pashmina was a gift from my boyfriend.

DIVA of the Week - Fig

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Fig 49
London

How would you describe your personal style?
Colourful, dramatic, eclectic, playful and comfortable. I love feminine dresses with a vintage vibe; big, loud, obnoxious prints; brogues and ballet flats; floaty chiffon teamed with denim; coloured tights; bangles, baubles and big shiny beads. I also think the shrug is quite possibly the greatest invention of the 21st Century. While I’m passionate about clothes, I’m more ambivalent about fashion. Being plus-sized in the UK makes one something of a fashion outlaw by default. In order to find your style you learn to be inventive and resourceful. I’m an unrepentant hoarder, snapping up clothes that make my heart sing when I see them – regardless of when or where I’m likely to wear them or whether I have something to wear them with. Sometimes a garment might not make its début for a year or two, which can make for some pretty idiosyncratic combinations – but, to be honest, that suits me; I’ve never liked following the herd.

What are you wearing today?
The 80s coat is from Oxfam and the velvet and plaid taffeta snood-like hat-type thingy from a late, lamented hat store Dyzrhythmia. Bag is H & M, bought second hand; pink thermal gloves, pink tights and vintage Liberty’s scarf were gifts. Vintage brooch on coat, and Scandinavian silver and enamel daisy brooch on sweater, belonged to my friend Jude’s mum. The red and pink dichroic glass earrings were bought at a craft fair aeons ago. My black patent brogues are from Clarks, about 15 years old. Red wrap-around sweater, Monsoon, as is the turquoise top underneath. Tweed skirt, Windsmoor.

DIVA of the Week - Mayra

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.

Mayra 19
Sunny Southern Texas, US

How would you describe your personal style?
My style usually revolves around late 1950's to early 1960's. Although, I'm a chameleon and influences in style change often. I'm always intertwining eras, patterns, colors and shapes. My ideas range from favourite shows (Pushing Daisies), movie stars (Katherine Hepburn), and music (Buddy Holly). Right now, my grandmother's style in the 60's in my biggest inspiration. I know I'm getting it right when she tells me she had something just like that when she was younger.

What are you wearing today?
The sweater is from Old Navy. I bought it ages ago and it has to be the one thing that I constantly have to stitch together from using it so much. The dress is from H&M, my one indulgence when I visit my sister in New York. The shoes are from Marshal's. You can find me there once a week scanning the racks like a mad woman. Recently, I found a DKNY skirt and I practically fainted.

Cynara 25
Winnipeg, Canada

How would you describe your personal style?
I am always trying to move forward and evolve. The only thing consistent about my personal style is that it's constantly changing, always in flux. It's kind of a sickness really, an addiction to the point where i won't wear the same outfit twice. I do have staple pieces, but I will always change tights or accessories or--at the very least-- jewellery, to avoid repetition, I used to believe in all the so-called "rules" put forth by "style experts" on makeover shows, ridiculous things like "don't mix prints, wear horizontal stripes, a-line silhouette only" etc etc now I take great joy and satisfaction in flouting the rules. I like unexpected colour and texture combinations, bold prints, and playing with layers and proportions.

What are you wearing today?
I'm wearing a houndstooth sweater skirt by Le Chateau. The cardigan is george line at Walmart and the tee is Old Navy. Tights are from welovecolors and the mj/booty hybrids Anne Ross via Chacha Shoes. The flower pin is from Holt outlet.

Carla 24

How would you describe your personal style?
Very, very, very eclectic. I can be a girly girl one day and a dark goth on the other. I like to try every style, the only thing that can stop me is the market. In Portugal the fashion industry has much to grow, and even though it has became a little bit easier to find some good and big sized clothes, the variety still has much to improve.

What are you wearing today?
I am wearing a cardigan from H&M, a top and dress from Mango, boots from Billabong and acessories and bag from Parfois.

Alegra 22
Mainz, Germany

How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as rather confident because i do like to show my figure and avoid overly baggy clothes while still dressing appropriately for my size. I love bright red items of clothing and accessories, along with jeans, white, and black - it's classical but fresh and i will never grow tired of this combination. I would like say that it is hard to be fashionable with little money, a fuller figure and a height of 5'2 but it's well possible :). It's my aim to always look cute despite being a size 16/18.

What are you wearing today?
I am wearing an h+m bright red coat, h+m stripey long shirt (knotted at the side), primark grey skinnies, silver sparkling ballerinas from new yorker (german retailer), sixx heart necklace, and amélie poulain bag from barcelona.

Valerie 28

How would you describe your personal style?
Girly girl is the first thing that pops into my mind. I love dresses and fun/feminine accessories. As a plus-size woman it can be difficult to develop your own style because the market is still not offering enough trendy and well-cut clothes. A few years ago I used to buy something if it fitted, and then worry later how to accessorize the outfit to make it more fun and more me. Nowadays the internet is a fat girl's best friend!

What are you wearing today?
I am wearing a Benina & Lu dress from their new collection. The boots are Diesel and my new love! Accessories from Asos and Primark.

My dress is from Primark, bought ages ago but I've only just started wearing it this summer. My tights are from New Look, shoes are from Office, and my green ring is from Camden market. The rest of my jewellery - the 'Love Is...' bracelet, Scrabble bracelet and button ring, are all made by me!

This is the first time a reader has sent in a picture of themselves, asking to be in the DIVA of the Week section. First I was a bit hesitant as I originally had this idea of having a purely streetstyle type of feature, but then I thought 'why not', the more the merrier!

What attracted my attention to Emma, more than what she was wearing, was the way she carried herself. She oozed self-confidence and wasn't fazed at all when I asked to take her picture. She's living proof that being comfortable in your own skin is what makes you attractive.

I love clean and classic items of clothing, although I'm a real girly girl at heart. I get inspired by a lot of my friends and I try to follow the current trends with varied success. I really enjoy trying to work what's fashionable to my own style, be it an 'in' colour or accessories.

What are you wearing today?
The top is from the Yours summer sale (thanks DIVA Look Book for the tip!), cardi from New Look, jeans Old Navy and shoes from Primark. I'm also wearing my favourite art deco butterfly ring from Torrid.

DIVA of the Week - Layla part 2

DIVA of the week is a feature that showcases people with an inspirational personal style. DIVA of the week is someone who's not afraid to have fun with clothes and who dresses to please herself, and in doing so, brightens up everyone else's day.
