Goodie bag - how to pack for a holiday

This week's Goodie Bag will hopefully get you into a holiday mood. I'm working on a Look Book of 'things to pack for a summer holiday' and I want some tips from you! Let me know what you think are the essential items of clothing you need to take with you, what sort of clever ways you might have of fitting a holiday wardrobe into a suitcase, and whether anyone really thinks 6 pairs of shoes are 'too many' for a week's holiday.

Well now...I just managed a mini break in Dublin all packed into this bag: backpack by gigalea Of course I did only pack underwear, a spare dress and my pyjama's (which I wore on the plane home) so maybe i'm not the best person to give advice on stylish holiday packing!
Well, if you got the money, nothing else is _really_ essential.
Nothing's more fun that a good excuse for buying new clothes.
I've often realized that I have too few "fancy-looking" pieces of clothing with me when I'm abroad.

Well, what to pack with you for a Summer holiday. I always pack a lot of things, but the most essential is money and tickets for the flight/train.
I always try to pick up clothes that can be used for any occasion, a skirt, trousers/jeans and tops, cardigans and shirts for nightlife, a day in the city etc. There's no point in packing tons of stuff if you can take just a few, and then combine them for different occasions. AND then you have room for new clothes :D
Clothes that don't crease (or crease to easily) then you don't have to spend ages folding stuff perfectly or ironing it when you arrive! :D
And always pack an iPod and charger!

mä koitan aina pakata mukaan vaan toisiinsa sopivia vaatteita. Päätän jonkun punaisen langan, esim kaksi väriä ja paiskon kassiin sit vain päättämäni värisiä vaatteita. Usein se on musta + joku muu. Eli kaiken täytyy sopia kaiken kanssa. Musta trikoomekko toimii monessa tilanteessa joten se lähtee aina mukaan. muutenkin sellasia tunikoita ja mekkoja, joita voi pitää yksinään tai housujen tai leggareiden kanssa. Vaatteita joita voi kerrostaa. Sitten kohtuullinen kasa koruja ja huiveja mukaan, jotta ilmettä saa vaihdeltua tarpeen mukaan.
hyvä vinkki on myös se, että kaivaa pyykkikorista kaiken sen missä on edellisenä parina viikona iihtynyt ja pesee ne mukaan. on ainakin sellaisia vaatteita joissa viihtyy. ei kannata kaivaa matkalle mukaan kaapin perältä sellaisia vaatteita, joita ei ole muutenkaan aikoihin käyttänyt. Tulevat vaan käyttämättöminä takaisinkin.
jos lähtisin matkalle nyt pakkaisin mukaan mustat kiiltävät legginssini, mustan trikoomekon, yhdet farkut, mustan nuletakin, peri perustoppia aluspaidoiksi, esim. pinkin ja keltaisen ja sitten muutaman pitkän t-paidan/tunikan + kasan koruja ja sandaalit ja ballerinat. Ei vie paljoa tilaa ja pärjää joka tilanteessa.

I don't think 6 pairs are too much! That's always the biggest problem with me: which shoes to take with me. Thank God this year we are going to travel by car, so I don't need to carry everything!
camilla: You wore your pyjamas on the plane?? :D
hanna: very true, my mum always used to say that what you forget you can buy when you get there. :D I think this is the only one of her 'wisdoms' that has stuck with me. :P I'm actually the opposite to you, I tend to 'save' nice clothes for special occasions like holidays and end up with a suitcase full of fancy things and nothing sensible to wear...
suvinoma: I think the art of perfecting a 'capsule' wardrobe of items you can mix and match is something that sounds easier than it is. Sounds like you've got the hang of it!
amy: so true... why oh why does linen have to be the most comfortable fabric in the hot, but also the most prone to creasing! Unfair I say.
veera/tuhlaus: vähänkö mulla kesti ennenkö yhdistin tuon veera nimen suhun. :D Mutta juu, sulla on kyllä niin pettämätön silmä vaatteiden yhdistelemisen kanssa että voisin ihan palkata sut aina pakkaamaan mun matkalaukun. Mulla aina jotenkin matkaan lähtee ne jotain speciaalia varten säästellyt rytkyn jotka sitten ei olekaan mukavia tai käytännöllisiä yms.

Tänne saa blogilistan mukaan kuulemma kommentoida suomeksikin :) Teen tällä kertaa niin, sillä tuo english on mulla vähän mitä on.
Eli.. Lomailemaan lähtiessäni pakkailu riippuu usein määränpäästä. Jos olisin lähdössä vaikka Pariisiin, ottaisin mukaani kauniita mekkoja, mutta mikäli eräjormailua on tiedossa rönttövaatteet saavat kelvata. :D Kenkien kanssa tulee usein suurimmat ongelmat, sillä korkkarit vievät hurjasti tilaa flipfloppeihin verrattuna. Joka tapauksessa ainakin kolmet tai neljät jalkineet on mahdutettava mukaan :D Muutaman viikon päästä pääsen kokeilemaan pakkailua muuaallakin kuin oman pään sisällä, sillä suuntana on ihana Ahvenanmaa :)
oih! Tahtoo tuollaisen ihanan lompakon! I just love that color! ja muutenkin aivan ihana. Että mitäkö matkalle mukaan? Iso tyhjäHKÖ matkalaukku, että sopii matkalta kaikki ihanuudet kotio päin :) Minulla on niin paljon kaikkia "välttämättömyyksiä" mitä pitää MUKA ottaa mukaan, ettei ikinä onnistuisi lähteä pelkällä lompakolla! Pitää olla kenkiä, vaatteita, kosmetiikkaa, RAKKOLAASTARIT, kaiken maailman hätävaraneulat, lukemista ja kaikkialle PITÄÄ raahata mukana jokin käsityö. Haluaisin niin olla ihminen, joka lähtee vain kukkaro mukanaan mutta minkä luonteelleen voi? :)
Salla: tuo on tietysti ihan totta, erilaiset lomat vaatii erilaiset varusteet. Mulla oli varmaan mielessä kliseisesti sellanen perus-rantaloma-setti, vaikka itse en ees sellasesta pääse tänä kesänä nauttimaan. Enpä myöskään oo koskaan käyny Ahvenanmaalla vaikka yritystäkin on ollu, ois kyllä kiva joskus päästä tutustumaan.
anne: mullakin aina sitä 'tärkeetä' kamaa vaan kasaantuu ja kasaantuu ja aina on vaikeuksia sulkea matkalaukku. Silti voi unohtua tärkeitäkin, kuten viimeksi Roomassa huomasin suihkusta tullessa ettei tullut mitään hiustuotteita mukaan, ja mun hiukset (silloin vielä pitkät) ei todellakaan selviä ilman mitään tuotetta. Ei auttanu muuta kun miehen lähteä lähikauppaan hakemaan tököttiä. :D
creaed or not, I love linen. Just bought some dressier white linen trousers from Debenhams to dress up or down :) My big holiday dressing tip is scarves. Light fabric pashminas are cool to wear and can give any outfit a more dressy feel. Can also be used to disguise any bits you would rather not show in a strappy top!
I have no shame when it comes to traveling in my pjs! I suppose it helps that my pjs are actually some super cheap yoga pants from Peacocks, so I think I got away with it!
I think if I was going to America i'd just take the bare minimum and as much cash as I could so that I could fill my cases up with clothes to bring home (I found an amazing vintage dress in Austin when I was there a few years ago- I remember running out of the changing room to tell my friend 'it fits me! I'd never find something this great at home that actually fitted me!'.
I've had to pack a lot this summer, as I came to Edinburgh from Toronto for an internship with the National Galleries of Scotland. My #1 tip for effective packing is to roll your clothes - I was skeptical but it totally works, and takes up less space than if the clothes were folded.
In terms of packing for a holiday or weekend away, I've gotten really good at packing my life into a backpack for trips to London, Stirling, and the Isle of Skye. Gladiator sandals are a must, as they're simultaneously dressy and casual, and so do double duty for your wardrobe while away. Capri pants are great for sightseeing, as they're cool and comfortable, but help you avoid the dreaded chub rub.
Basically, as my holidays are generally spent walking and hostel-ing (still a student), I'm sticking with the light jeans/blousy top/cardi/sandals with rotating jewellry look. While it may seem silly to bring a lot of jewellry on a trip, it's an easy way to change (class up/dress down) your outfit with limited baggage space.

gina: I agree that light loose linen trousers are the most comfortable thing in summer heat. And I also love scarves. We have this ongoing argument with my husband about whether such thing as a 'summer scarf' exists - he doesn't quite get the concept. :D

alison: Lots of people swear by rolling up their clothes - can fit more in, there's less creasing. :D
Minä tein juuri kolmen viikon matkan mukanani vain yhdet monikäyttöiset ballerinat (nätit ja hyvät jalkaan, niin että kelpasivat sekä kävelyyn, rannalle että ravintolaan), yhdet sortsit, muutama kesämekko, bikinit, yksi pitkähihainen teeppari, yksi neuletakki, pashminahuivi ja tietenkin kasa toppeja, alusvaatteita, leggareita ja sukkahousuja. Ja pärjäsin oikeasti ihan hyvin!
Syynä vaatevaraston vähäisyyteen toki oli se, että matkustin moottoripyörän kyydissä, ja laukuissa oli hyvin rajallisesti tilaa.
Okei, en varmastikaan ollut kovin tyylikäs koko matkaa. Paljon saa kuitenkin aikaiseksi, kun valitsee mukaansa vaatteita, jotka sopivat kaikki toisiinsa ja joita yhdistelemällä saa hyvin erilaisia asukokonaisuuksia aikaiseksi. Korkeavyötäröiset sortsit olivat esimerkiksi mahtavat matkassa; niistä sai hyvin erinäköiset pitämällä erilaisia toppeja ja legginsejä niiden päällä ja alla.
